The Prescription on Medicine Cabinets

When renovating your bathroom there are a lot of decisions and choices to make, from the room layout to fixtures. And you may not think much about it, but your fixtures also includes your vanity mirror. Many of our homeowner’s request modern-looking, convenient storage for frequently used items but have limited space in their bathroom.  A current trend we are seeing is the use of medicine cabinets, but they don’t look like Grandma’s old mirrors anymore!

There are several things to keep in mind when choosing the right medicine cabinet. There are many choices and they offer a wider array of features than ever before. Here are the most important considerations:

  1. Size: There are several measurements to take into consideration. First is the width of your vanity top. Also, you’ll want to determine the height that you want the mirror to be placed. Finally, it’s important to consider the distance between the lights as well as the placement of your faucet.
  2. Installation: Another factor to take into consideration is the mounting. Your medicine cabinet can be recessed into the wall, partially recessed, or surface mounted. Not all mirrors are mounted the same, so consider your space and it’s capabilities prior to selection.
  3. Hinges: Most cabinets allow the hinges on the left or right, so decide in advance which way you want the cabinet door to open for clearance.
  4. Additional Features: Some mirrors have special features, so determine what is best suited for your space. Additional features can include task lighting, electrical outlets inside or outside, small task mirrors inside, push button doors, locks and mirrors lighting.

We work closely with our homeowners to ensure the medicine cabinet or vanity mirror they choose will not only meet their needs but be aesthetically pleasing. Whether you want to sell your home in the near future or if this is your forever home, we like to capture as much functional space as possible while ensuring a beautiful finished product.
