Spectacular Kitchen Renovation for Entertaining

This couple came to us hoping to not only update their kitchen for improved function, utilization of space, and more storage, but to also open the area between the kitchen into their family room. When entertaining, guests were isolated from the kitchen where all the action was, and their goal was to open the entrance and make the two areas cohesive.

During the design phase of the project, we had difficulty with the layout due to limited wall space. Thinking outside the box, we removed a doorway from the back entry, creating a hall from the back door to the kitchen/dining area. This allowed for not only more wall space in the kitchen, but it also eliminated the direct sight line from the kitchen into the laundry room. We moved the door from the kitchen to the formal dining room to gain yet more uninterrupted wall space. By removing a large L-shaped island in the center of the kitchen, we now had room to create a large island with seating.

This was the second remodel for this kitchen, and during the previous renovation a structural beam was added which made enlarging the opening from the kitchen to the family room as much as we had hoped for, more challenging. Our solution was to support a beam perpendicular to the structural beam to carry the weight to the foundation. By removing a large unused desk area in the kitchen and a seldom used small office in the family room, we had more options for how best to seamlessly transition from the family room to kitchen.

This first floor transformation is stunning. From dark and outdated to light, bright and modern, each space is a delight with significantly improved functional use of space. The new hallway entrance to the kitchen/eating area from the back door and back stairs is engaging with not only a drop zone for keys and purses, but also a custom-built cabinet for showcasing their cookbooks.

Around the corner is a large cabinet with roll out shelves, and above it, a TV is hidden behind cabinet doors. A paneled 48” side by side refrigerator and freezer and a double oven with French doors round out this wall. A 36” Pro range with a pot-filler faucet are centered on the back wall with a custom hood to match the cabinetry. Spice and utensil drawers flank the range for customized storage for these avid cooks.

A personalized coffee station, a large walk-in pantry (which was a must), and a large china and silver cabinet with glass doors and shelves add a touch of tradition. A huge island is now the prep space for cooking and houses a large sink and faucet, microwave drawer, dishwasher, and hidden storage under the new seating for four.

The finished renovation is absolutely stunning, and the transformation is dramatic. Each space is full of function, uniqueness, and beauty. The homeowner enjoys coming downstairs in the morning and when her husband asks why she turns on all the lights, and answers, “because I absolutely love this space and want to be in it.” No higher praise can be asked than that.

In this homeowners’ own words:
“Corinthian did a large kitchen/family room renovation project for us. Ultimately, the most important criterion for the work is the satisfaction with the end product. For that, they deserve an “A” thanks to thoughtful planning and careful attention to detail. Their crew was respectful and professional; the workmanship first class. The project was expensive but without hidden costs. Probably the most telling feature of our satisfaction would be that we would use Corinthian again without hesitation.”
