Sophisticated Open Concept First Floor Addition and Renovation

This family has become a part of the Corinthian family as a multi-renovation client over the past several years. As always it was fun to help them achieve their goals with this renovation. They had outgrown their isolated kitchen which was separated from their family room and asked us to design a space that would provide an open floor concept for their first floor living spaces. In addition, they asked us to design and build a detached golf simulator and entertaining pavilion for their three active boys.

We opened their kitchen, adding square foot real estate to the back of the home, as well as removing the wall that separated the family room from the kitchen and back door access. With this additional space and by reconfiguring their back entry and powder bath areas, we were able to give them a designated mudroom area complete with lockers and a frosted glass pocket door. A custom-built hutch to complement the kitchen was added near this area filled with pantry overflow and snacks to grab on their way out the door. A more accommodating powder bath with black custom vanity and mitred countertop was added with easy access for the pavilion.

With this reconfiguration of space, we were able to repurpose their existing dining area into a coffee station and seating area. Custom walnut cabinetry featuring black trimmed glass front upper cab and floating shelves for display, their impressive coffee maker allows guests to make their favorite hot beverage, including the use of a small bar sink. This opens nicely into the new spacious and open kitchen, complete with custom black and walnut cabinetry and a gorgeous black hood with gold trim. An island with end cabinet storage anchors this room and the Subzero and Wolf appliances add a nice stainless pop. Gorgeous brass light fixtures complete each space and enhance not only the aesthetics but also the function of each area. The new dining area opens between the kitchen and family room with plenty of seating for all and a nice visual of their large beautifully landscaped back yard and new pavilion. The family room is not only easily accessible from the kitchen and dining areas, but it also received an updated bar area, complete with new cabinetry, countertops, beverage fridge and antique glass backsplash.

In this homeowners’ own words:
“They say the kitchen is the heart of the home and Corinthian Fine Homes certainly made ours into one that quickens my heartbeat and soothes my soul. Our old kitchen was small and cozy for us, but tight when we hosted anyone in our home. When we moved into our home 15 years ago, our family was still growing, and that old kitchen worked for us. But as the kids got older, it was clear that we needed more space and I desired someplace that would inspire me to cook. Our new kitchen is better than I could imagine! The elegance and design of our kitchen still makes my heart beat happy. I love how our kitchen blends with our nearly 50-year-old home but updates it just the same. We have plenty of work areas and other areas that encourage you to gather. One of my favorite aspects of my kitchen is how it opens up to our home and welcomes in the sunshine. The light pours in from multiple sides all day long and it is just a wonderful, warm place to be. As a mom who sometimes feels like I never leave the kitchen, that’s a really good thing! I wanted a kitchen that inspired me, but the best surprise is how it has inspired my oldest son to explore the kitchen. Last weekend, I came home to find my 15-year-old baking cookies from scratch! I was warmed by the realization that our kitchen inspires not just me, but my children alike. And yes, the cookies were amazing!”
