This delightful family requested improved storage and function in their home thinking their attic was the only answer, however by giving their current mudroom and beyond a complete makeover we achieved the function they needed.
By reworking the entire orientation of the room, we moved the access to their backyard and added French doors where there had been windows, which improved traffic flow and the use of the space. We added custom lockers for each family member with a storage bench and matching cabinets for art supplies for their kids. A new closet was added where the original door and entry had been for even more storage.
During the demo phase of this project, we found we were able to slightly vault the ceiling to give greater height and improve the open aesthetic of the room. We also added a serving and storage buffet in their dining room which carried the mudroom aesthetic into the home.
In addition, we re-designed their fireplace and removed the mantle and the multiple layers of hearth which had been built up over the years creating an uneven floor transition. By adding a wood mantle with trim and moldings and a porcelain tile surround and hearth that mimicked marble, we were able to update this focal point of the living room and keep the original charm of this 100-year-old house.
For even more storage, we added attic access with a pull-down ladder in an upstairs hallway where our homeowners have additional storage real estate. The finished project has not only improved the function and aesthetic of their home, but they now have a few empty areas just waiting to be filled.
