These homeowners asked us to design an updated kitchen with improved space planning, a modern aesthetic, and better storage and function. Additionally, they asked us to update their entire first floor for open entertaining and cohesiveness with the kitchen.
Their kitchen had an awkward angled island that limited its functional use and usable space in the room. he angled pantry they had was not user friendly, and the layout of the space was not ideal. We completely redesigned the kitchen layout, allowing for a large kitchen island, cabinetry taken to the eat-in nook, and relocated all the appliances. Taj Mahal Quartzite counters and full height splash create impact on the island, and the sink sports a kitchen faucet as well an insta-hot beverage faucet. A custom hood, finished to match the island, is now the focal point of the room and is symmetrical with the new sink, lighting, and the hearth room fireplace. Seating for two creates a cozy area for morning coffee and the kitchen area seating has doubled for this couple who enjoy entertaining. A large walk-in pantry with modern barn door access was designed with specificity to the homeowners needs. It also houses the chiller for the bar chilled water faucet.
We removed built-in cabinetry around the hearth room fireplace and created a new entry into the family room. Both doorways were widened and now sport clean modern arches for consistency with the arches throughout the home. The circular traffic flow allows an openness for entertaining in the kitchen, hearth room and family room. We eliminated built-ins on either side of the hearth room fireplace, simplified the design, and painted the original fireplace black. We installed polished marbled white tile on the face and hearth, which gives it a modern aesthetic that coordinates well with the kitchen cabinetry.
In the 2-storied family room, we knew we wanted the fireplace wall to be our focal point. By building the fireplace wall forward, we created a dimensioned fireplace by recessing the firebox and surround. 5-1/2’ by 10-1/2’ polished Calacatta Topaz porcelain slabs with a polished finish were installed floor to ceiling with matching hearth for a sophisticated impact. With the new fireplace wall, we knew we wanted to elevate the aesthetic of the room, so removing the crown moulding and adding a coffered ceiling with a large bronze chandelier gives the room the impact we wanted. In the entry, we rebuilt the banister and stairs for a modern look, removed the carpet and added a runner. The balustrade was stained to match the kitchen cabinetry and the stair treads match the newly refinished hardwoods. Additionally, we simply added matching chandelier for an interconnected space. The dining room received a fresh paint palette and gold pendants elevate this space as well.
Between the dining room and kitchen, we widened the opening and raised the ceiling to incorporate a wet bar into this entertainers-dream of the first floor. A brass hand hammered sink, beverage faucet with filtered chilled water, and a bar faucet add all you’d want for guests. Paneled ice maker and beverage refrigerator and custom cabinetry make this space a frequent gathering place. Further down the hall an unused “mom’s desk” was repurposed, and a barn-door gives access to a large walk-in pantry, which was a must have for these homeowners. At the end of the hall, we gave a small powder bath an update including Lisel Jane Ashlock blue floral wallpaper as a focal wall. A floating vanity with new champagne bronze plumbing fixtures adds chic warmness and modern lighting brings the elegance this room deserved. Under cabinet lighting creates a special ambience whether overhead lights are on or off.
We also removed the carpet in the family room, stairs and dining room and added hardwood flooring in areas and refinished the hardwoods in other areas.
This renovation elevated the aesthetic of the entire first floor. The kitchen has gone from an awkward space to cook with limited storage to a gathering space allowing for entertaining family and friends.
In this homeowners’ own words:
“Corinthian really hit a home run with our project.”
The finished remodel not only improved how this family functions in their home, but also brings a stunning aesthetic, with the WOW factor starting in the entry.
